Iran Trade in local currency a step forward to boost regional economy: analyst

Dr Ashfaq Ahsan Khan, renowned economist, on Monday said trade in local currency would help boost regional economy and create better understanding among the people of Islamic countries. “President Asif Ali Zardari’s suggestion of trade between Pakistan-Iran in local currency is a step forward to strengthen relations besides economy of the two nations, ” Dr Ashfaq said this while talking to Pakistan Television.

He said: “We are member of “Asian Currency Unit” since 1974 and the proposal of President Asif Ali Zardari to use local currency for trade is a step in the right direction.” The implementation of the suggestion would improve business relations between the two neighboring countries, he said. The economist said: “This is the part of our efforts to enhance regional and bilateral cooperation.”Pakistan and Iran are also members of ECO and there is a need to strengthen these relations so that both the countries can benefit from each other’s experiences, he observed.

Replying to a question, he said the decision to enhance the trade to 4 billion US dollars level was a sound step of the leadership of both the countries. He said the provision of gas and power by Iran would have positive impact on the economy of Pakistan. Dr.Ashfaq said that there was a need to utilize available resources in a proper manner so that the people could enjoy better facilities in days to come.
