Pushya Nakshatra, considered an auspicious occasion for investment, saw a spurt in the sale of gold and silver as Ludhianvis rushed in and out of jewellery showrooms on Thursday to pick their form of the glittering metals. Though residents are getting into festive mood and shelling out big money, jewellers are keeping their fingers crossed to see whether it will really be a Happy Diwali for them.

Prominent jewellers said the fluctuating price of gold has affected sales this year but with six more days left for Diwali, more residents may buy gold and silver gifts. Administrative manager of PC Jewellers, Rani Jhansi Road, Gagandeep Singh said, "Ludhianvis have been asking for gold and silver coins as gifts for close friends and relatives. We have a huge variety of coins with pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha engraved on them. Some customers are asking for gold currency notes and for unique gifts such as gold flowers,'' he said.

Manager of Nikka Mal Jewellers Jasvir Kumar said many regular customers are waiting for gold rate to stabilize. Rajguru Nagar-resident Navjot Kaur said it is a family tradition to buy some gold during Diwali. "This year I plan to buy a ring for myself and a coin for my husband. Since the rate of gold has gone up, we are not going to buy many things,'' she said.
